Shenton College scoops WA Education Awards

Shenton College, a purpose-built secondary school which opened in 2001 in Perth’s western suburbs, took home three awards in the recently announced WA Education Awards. The College was named the state’s top secondary school and principal Mike Morgan was crowned WA’s Secondary Principal of the Year.

Josie Hodgetts, from the Shenton College Deaf Education Centre, was named the School Support Staff Member of the Year. Ms Hodgetts, who is deaf, was acknowledged as the “driving force” behind Auslan, a sign language being introduced as a subject at Shenton College next year. In addition, first-year teacher Rebecca Halse was also recognised as one of eight Beginning Teachers of the Year.

Speaking after receiving the award, which was sponsored by The Sunday Times and PerthNow, Mr Morgan said he felt privileged to work in the “most outstanding public education system in the world”.

Education Minister Peter Collier said Shenton College was a “flagship school”. “It has established itself as a flagship school and I congratulate the college and its staff on winning three awards this year. The college has been named WA Secondary School of the Year for its consistently high student achievement and success rates, as well as its outstanding teachers and strong leadership.”
